The most famous site must be the Eddystone Reef 12 miles S.W. of Plymouth. Divers from far and wide come back time and time again to experience its dramatic rocky pinnacles and good visibility (I have seen divers down at 26 metres when I was still at the surface). |
|
A few miles west of Eddystone is Hand Deeps, this is a plateau that comes up to 15 metres. One side has a craggy cliff face that drops to 27 metres. At the bottom of the cliff you will find giant boulders |

Here’s a list of some of the more popular sites with brief comments, (if you want to know more about any of the sites give me a call). Mewstone Ledges; Hillsea Point Rock ~ underwater peak a sort of mini Eddystone. Fairylands ~ as the name implies. Rame Head ~ found quite a few bits here including a compass binnacle. Penlee Point ~ well sheltered rocky with sandy gullies, you can get a nice dive here even when it’s blowing a S.W. howler. The Shagstone ~ Cannon Ball Alley! Knap, Tinker, and Panther reef ~ popular shallow dives in Plymouth Sound. Stoke Point; Draystone Ledges; The Victorian Dumping Ground ~ a really good scrummage. |

then a long ramble down to the seabed. Some way to the west of Hand Deeps is my favourite, an isolated flat-topped reef called Hatt Rock, I can’t think of a better way to describe a dive here than BREATH TAKING. It’s about 25 metres to the top, with a sheer cliff face down to around 40 metres, at which point it slopes off to about 50 metres. We’ve had VISIBILITY of around 38 metres here. |

Back to the east is the East Rutts, yet another cracking good rock dive 12 metres on top with drop-offs to 35 metres, as with the other offshore sites visibility of 30 metres can be expected on a good day. |
